Current project: PRIMED ISSUE 02 (expected release 2026).

Smell resists precision; it presents the brain with ambiguous, often fragmented data, and our lack of robust language around smell and its link to emotional processing in the brain makes it particularly susceptible to persuasion. As a consequence, interpretation relies heavily on memory and prior association.

Language and expectation don’t just colour perception — they create it. Scent is not merely detected, but authored by external stimulus and the inner world of the perceiver.

Along with my creative partner, Saskia Dodds-Painter, I’ve been diving into the early development of the second issue of Nose Magazine - Primed. This issue explores the intricate intersections of scent, culture, and memory, bringing together storytelling, art, and olfactory experimentation. From conceptualising the features to shaping the visual and editorial direction, we are collaborating closely with 15+ artists, writers, and other creatives to create an exciting second edition of this publication. Primed reflects our ongoing commitment to crafting a magazine that is thoughtful, experimental, and encourages smelling with more curiosity and intention.
